Tackle Trap: An Alternative To The Zone Read

In the majority of spread offenses at the collegiate level, the zone read is a cornerstone of the offense. What do you do if you don’t have the personnel to be successful with a zone run game? I have found that the tackle trap is a great alternative to the zone read in the shot-gun spread offense.

Based on how the defensive ends are taught, if the near shoulder of the OT pulls and goes down the line, most of the time this means that the DE must bend and chase after the play. If the DE goes down the line, then the QB has an easy read and must pull the ball. This should garner a TON of extra yards every single time. If the DE sees the tackle he is over pull and works straight up field, he will hear it from the DL coach when he comes off the field because he is not keeping contain. This is a great play that can take advantage of the DE being read.
